Terrific-value modern pie-and-mash shop keeping it real in tourist-heavy Covent Garden Market.
With bargain prices and proper British food, this pie and mash house is something of an anomaly among the tourist traps of Covent Garden Market. It’s housed in one of the refurbished subterranean arches, keeping the traditional exterior and flagstone floor, but the fixtures and fittings are stylish and modern: bright white tiles, polished marble tables and a shiny counter.
Besides the traditional fillings such as steak and mushroom with stout, minced beef and onion, or chicken and mushroom are less expected versions such as butternut squash and goat’s cheese or salmon, cod and prawns. They all have pleasingly firm crusts. A chicken and mushroom costs a mere fiver and creamy, well-whipped mash an extra £2.75. Rich red-wine gravy arrived separately in a miniature jug. Ingredient quality was exemplary throughout – so much so that, even though full, we attempted to finish a sticky toffee pudding (£4.75 and also tip-top) between two of us.
Even for a counter-service place this little caff is terrific value – and is the exception to the rule that central Covent Garden is best avoided by the bargain hunter.
Based in the heart of Covent Garden – the oldest market in London – we strive to provide a truly authentic and delicious British dining experience to everyone who walks through our doors.
At Battersea Pie all our pies are made with proper old-fashioned pastry, free range meat, and fresh vegetables – all sourced where possible from the British Isles.
Why not organise a delivery for your office? For your family gathering? We also cater for events, so drop us a line if you think pie and mash would make your event or celebration that little bit better, and tastier.

You can take the boy out of the north but you can't take the north out of the boy. Such a brilliant place to eat when in Covent Garden. Pie, mash and such divine gravy. Usually soundtracked by cool music. My idea of heaven.
Compared to what Iv tried before, this place isnt nice at all.
No depth of flavour and the crust was not at all desirable.
Really enjoyed this. Great food, simple and really tasty! The staff are really pleasant too. You can eat outside in Covent Garden with some light entertainments whilst you eat depending on the time you go.
I love this place, but am slightly disappointed that the world is about to discover quite how great it is...I'm there once a week without fail
I'm slightly obsessed with the pie shops brilliant chicken and mushroom pies and the most gorgeous mash i've ever had. Friendly staff, brilliant food, good prices and not a long wait for your order. 5/5 all the way!
A really good venue for a swift meal. The staff are very friendly and efficient, and they make a fine pine. There's an interestingly varied set of side dishes to choose from, and the portions are generous. Slightly let down by the mash, which was a weirdly homogenous consistency, but otherwise a great choice.
Definitely five stars and the best pies in London by far! Disregard the 'brash dance music' too, it's often quite a varied selection and certainly adds torather than detracts from the ambience.
