El Vergel is a stark restaurant with polished concrete floors and grey walls – one of which is covered in colourful doodles that look a bit like a five-year-old’s graffiti. Its menu focuses on Latin American and Mediterranean cuisine. Not that you’d know any of that by looking at its website, where the focus is more on its catering service than the restaurant.
This is a shame, because there’s a lot to like about El Vergel. The food I tried was simple and fresh; generously sized tacos were stacked with crunchy iceberg lettuce, strips of chicken and cool tomato salsa. Good too was the restaurant’s signature Chilean steak sandwich which contained a juicy slab of meat drenched in oozing cheese.
The hip space feels like it would really come alive at night. But instead, El Vergel closes at 3pm on weekdays and 4pm on a Saturday, making this strictly a breakfast, brunch and lunch place – a good option for a quick bite if you live or work nearby but not so convenient for the rest of us. Unless you’ve got a five-year-old who really likes drawing on walls.

El Vergel, your new place is amazing. The food is fresh wholesome and great value. It's no wonder you are packed out every day! Well done, highly recommend to anyone who is unfamiliar with this unique place!
My first time at El Vergel was amazing!never had before a yummy yummy Chicken enchiladas. ...nice atmosphere colorful location friendly staff...I love it!!!! ill go back soon....
first time at El Vergel I really enjoyed the experience! the chicken enchiladas is the best ever...but roast chicken and chips "S I M P L Y AMAzing"...love the friendly atmosphere... must try....
Yummy! This is a real hidden gem... Wonderful food in the backstreets of SE1, away from hurly burly of Borough Market. My favourites: Churrasco palta with salsa and chilli (S American beef sandwich with avocado, salsa and chilli) and the cherry cheescake. And the daily specials are out of this world. Enjoy! PS - el vergel is open for brunch on Saturday, amazing menu... BUT it's closed in the evening.
I have been going to El Vergel for more than 5 years. Food has been consistently good and staff is friendly. Love the new bigger restaurant. Toilets are always clean which is a plus!
A third of paint of mango juice for 2.60 is robbery. The guacamole was not to a good standard and the service was slow and inexperienced. Not to mention the waitress, who wouldn't speak Spanish with me dropped my sandwich right next to me and didn't offer anything for the wait! Not very good, quite disappointing to be honest. A disappointed Chilean in London
