So hidden away is this café housed in the ground floor of a diamond-cutting factory that it escapes the notice even of long-time locals. But there’s no need to advertise: casual brunching couples, solo diners and a raucous birthday celebration filled the cute cobbled courtyard one sunny summer Sunday, bunting and lights strung up overhead. Indoors, the exposed brickwork lends an air of factory-chic.
Some of the young crowd had already started cracking into Aperol spritzes, but most were indulging in hearty breakfast fare and the own-made cakes, accompanied by a large mug of tea. All produce is carefully sourced, often locally. Part café and part bar, J&A aims to focus on ‘healthy and wholesome home-cooking and baking’, and to emphasise the point, rustic breads and own-made baked goods adorn its counter.
Eggs benedict arrived quickly, though the muffin was too tough to cut through; thick slices of Irish soda bread were swiftly brought as a replacement. Lunch choices include sandwiches, pies, quiche and salads, while bar snacks focus on simple small plates such as ham and mustard sauce.

Secluded diamond of a venue; great menus, amazing staff!
Recently held our wedding reception here, could not have wished for more!! Xx
Great space but shame about the pretentious owner who shows no customer interest, gets defensive over a few queries. Overpriced. Rather go a few doors down for more accommodating service instead.
Great hearty breakfasts. We used to make trips here before work and they really set you up for the day. Even the most simple dish is tasty and the slices of toast are thick, chunky and satisfying.
We have looked forward to trying j&a for ages – we live in clerkenwell – and went there with some visitors from India. It was appalling. We ordered salads which arrived with horrid dry couscous (one person is gluten-free), some wet leaves and two tomatoes for £10.50. The eggs benedict and the coffee were both cold. We were upstairs which is really tatty & cold with sticky tables. The door was hanging off the upstairs toilet and the main bathroom was dirty. Why would anyone go here when Workshop Coffee and Modern Pantry are round the corner.
I went for the first time today with a girlfriend and we had an amazing time, the food is delicious and fresh and the atmosphere is arty like garage/warehouse style, very original and not too pricey! I also love the area very peaceful and quiet but modern. I will definitely go again, it is one of my favourite places for lunch/ brunch !
I LOVE this place! I recently discovered this hidden gem with a friend and have returned many times since. The food has been delicious every time and the staff are very welcoming and helpful with their recommendations. It's refreshing to find a place that is not part of a chain and make all their food on site.
