The mix of polystyrene ceiling tiles and spearmint walls decked with posters of Krishna might not make it into World of Interiors, but this homely local’s vegetarian cuisine remains a big draw – and there’s plenty of it. Despite heeding advice that we were ordering too much, we were still filled up by our starter of patra (alvi leaves rolled in batter, sliced and served with tamarind sauce). Then came a special thali for two, with bhajis, tarka dhal, rice, chapatis and a choice of two curries (chickpea curry was rich and mildly spicy, spinach panir a little watery). The fact that the ice-cream was nothing to write home about was rather academic: we couldn’t have eaten more if we’d wanted to.

This place doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's BOYB, the food is ace - and even if you over order (which you probably will), it won't make too much of a dent in your bank balance.

Without a doubt the best curry I've had in London.
At no point do you care about the absence of meat - not when the delicate flavours of the coconut dosa or the moreish savouriness of the puffed wheat with tamarind are distracting you.
When you get the bill and baulk at the cheapness of the meal you've just loved you'll be checking your diary for when you can come back next...

Is Time Out's rating a mistake? Can we get it changed? My favourite Indian restaurant in London, veggie or non-veggie. Delicious, so cheap, and incredibly comprehensive offie across the road... I can't stop thinking about the aubergine bhajis...

When i was there with my family, sometime in ninety-seven, this place had already been selected as best in its genre by Time Out.. I don't know about now but we felt very welcome and had an excellent meal. We never missed the meat. It was clear that the proprietor had spend more time, energy and skill into the food than on the interior. Good choice. I would go there without hesitation. According to Time Out it won't h make too big a dent in your budget, when compared to other places..

This place is great..no extravagance no pretense...just homley Indian vegetarian/vegan food at a cheap price, left feeling full and BYOB is great-the offie is just across the road

We regularly travel from the other side of London to eat at this amazing restaurant. Consistently delicious! My favourite Indian in London, hands down. And love the BYO policy.

Delicious, great value and the best offy across the road with every beer you can imagine

We go here regularly and love it every time. The food is lovely the atmosphere is great. It is easy going and reliable. The coconut rice is a winner and the exotic dishes are really tasty. Those who are devotees of meat won't miss it, being one of those myself. I'd recommend it, the BYO policy is just the icing on the cake.

Delicious food, BYO and very reasonably priced - cant really ask for more!

I am not a vegetarian and I went Jai Krishna very sceptically... and loved it! I ended up trying half the menu each dish more tastey than the last, BYO is amazing the bill was around a tenner and we were all full!

Delicious vegetarian food. I wish I lived nearer so I could eat here everyday. Simple and basic interior but felt friendly. Excellent value for money. I don't drink alcohol but drinkers can bring their own booze. I love this place.

I've been eating here 25 years, the most consitently good vegi food anywhere,

Bring your own booze, means no inflated drinks charges. Food is excellent and service friendly as long as you're not expecting silver service you'll love it!

Always reliable, delicious, & good value. Have been a regular for 10 years

The food's delicious, cheap and filling. The booze is bring your own. What more could you want? Yes the seating's not that amazing and the staff are 50/50 for rudeness but the best but if you're like me and you don't care, it really doesn't change how good the experience is. Never feel afraid to get a doggy bag either.

As a local I have visited Jai Krishna a few times over ten years, but am mostly put off by the rude (stressed out?) owners. The food is ok, a bit too oily and sugary for being healthy.

Not gourmet but cheap, tasty and very friendly. Bring your own booze from the excellent off-license across the road.

Highly recommend this place - delicious vegetarian dishes at excellent prices (£3.25 for a main curry). Highly recommend the special chana kachori and pumpkin curry with paneer. Also it's BYOB - another bonus

30years on as an occasional visitor to London this remains my favourite vege restaurant. The service used to be even more friendly but the value for money is still unbeatable and you can take your own drink. My choice for my sixtieth birthday - atmosphere always pleasant.

I have been to Jai Krishna a few times (although not recently) and I think it's a wonderful place; incredibly cheap, low-key and friendly. Don't go there expecting extravagant opulence (in fact don't even go there expecting napkins and matching cutlery), but the prices, the motivation and most importanly the food, are all spot on. I think the 2 star review from TO is a bit harsh - the review it didn't seem to justify the 2 star conclusion.
