Venue says Open lunchtimes, Tuesday to Sunday, offering a set menu from £12, ramen from £9.50 and sushi wraps from £6.50.

No sign of a recession at Tsunami: on our weekend visit, smartly dressed thirtysomethings packed the place. This suburban sushi restaurant and cocktail bar has found a recipe for success and is sticking to it. The international waiting staff were warm and welcoming, the dining room glam but not intimidating, and the menu packed with modern Japanese crowd-pleasers.

We began with a salad of beef tataki: seared slices of tender beef layered over rocket, beansprouts and red onion, dressed with sesame seeds and tangy, yuzu-based vinaigrette. Next, golden tempura-battered vegetables came in all textures, from soft sweet potato to chewy shiitake mushroom or crunchy lotus root. Sushi arrived beautifully presented on glazed earthenware, with slightly sweet, melt-in-the-mouth white tuna sashimi best enjoyed unadorned; dragon roll maki, combining sweet eel, avocado and tempura prawns, showed off the chefs’ skills.

The larger ‘main course’ section, dominated by meats in wasabi-based sauces, is somewhat tacky – head instead for the specials, where you might find crisp-skinned sea bass on a bed of braised gai lan (chinese broccoli). The small adjoining cocktail bar is a safe bet for pre- or post-prandial drinks.

Tsunami says
Tsunami restaurant has been established since 2001 and is still a big wave washing through Clapham. Following a full refurbishment in April 2015 this award-winning Japanese flagship restaurant has brought its look up to date, rivalling the best in central London. With wooden screens surrounding luxurious leather seating, it sets the scene for an exquisite meal if you fancy sushi, modern Japanese cuisine or delicious cocktails. And with a late license, too, this is certainly the place to go.

A minute walk from both Clapham North and Clapham Common stations. Open lunchtime Tuesday to Sunday for the whole summer season, offering a light a la carte menu, set menus from £12, ramen at £9.50 and sushi wraps at £6.50.

Amazing service and lovely food.

The blond lady in the reception was so kind and provide us a lovely and quiet table in the bar area.

Soon as we sat she set up the table and we get our drinks super fast .

yummy cocktails!!

Sashimi Selection, Pork Belly and Grilled Scallops the best choice for the palate. Awesome!

As dessert Chocolate Fondant with massive melted chocolate and green tea , sooo tasty!

Lovely experience, thanks Pilliar for giving us the best service and recommendations.

You won't be disappointed

we'll back soon.

Tsunami is ok sushi.  Nothing exceptional but better than your usual high street offerings. The brunch is meant to be very good, so will have to go back and try that! Service is mixed as there are clearly some staff who love their jobs and others who are counting down the minutes until it is time to close!  I will definitely return soon to give it another shot :)

Tsunami serves an equally pleasing brunch of all you can eat sushi, sashimi and appetisers for a mere £20. Get involved. You won't be disappointed.  Also, their dinner service is superb too. The service is friendly and with a smile.

Came here with a group of 7. It was quite crowded for a Monday so that may have been why the service was slow to start. Although we got drinks right away we had to keep asking to have our order taken. I had the tuna truffle tatare and a rainbow roll. The table split some edamame and squid for a starter. The squid was delicious, with a nice amount of seasoning on them to keep it interesting. Edamame was... well edamame ^_^

The tuna tatare was wonderfully presented and looked very appetising. It had a wonderful sauce, which reminded me of a ponzu, which paired nicely with the fish and avocado. Of course, if you don't like raw egg... not the dish for you! I did not manage to take a picture of the rainbow roll, trust me though it was pretty tasty!

Everyone agree that all though the service was a bit hit or miss, the food itself was delicious.

To round off the evening I had Tsunami's take on an Old Fashioned, made with Japanese whisky. The presentation was akin to Nightjar. Any drink that is accompanied by candy floss is a nod to the famous cocktail bar. It was fantastic. Highly recommend adding the floss to the drink, it changes the flavour (so try some first BEFORE adding!). The date garnish didn't make much sense, but what did I care? I had candy floss.

Awesome spot in Clapham North. Would definitely recommend, but maybe not with such a large group.

Really love love love this place! Its my favourite japanese restaurant in London for its value. The prices are not too expensive and the food is always top notch. The sushi are the best I have tried! Make sure you get some hot sake as well!

I loved it here but it is not that great for vegetarians (perhaps to be expected for a Japanese restaurant). The starters are great - try the miso aubergine - but the mains jus weren't that interesting. I loved my teriyaki salmon and the range of sushi was amazing. The dining room is beautiful and there are lots of trendy locals propping up the bar with interesting cocktails. The staff are lovely and the price wasn't too bad for the quality of the food and wine.

Incredible food, incredible service. Will definitely be going back. Worth every penny. A great meal to top a great night. Thanks.

I've been eating and recommending this place for years - they've packed in more tables over the years but that's because it's so damn good.  The addition of the bar means if you can't get in immediately or haven't booked (recommended) then you can have a few gorgeous cocktails while you wait.  The menu has changed a bit since 2005 but the best dishes are the ones that have pleased the crowds for years:  Gin Dara (Miso cod) / Kataifi prawns / salmon or tuna tartare / scallops / seaweed salad / foie gras sushi / etc  - I also recommend the passion fruit martinis.  For guaranteed tasty quality, it is worth every penny and, as a local, I can't recommend it more highly than I do, which is by going there regularly and testing always to see if it's as good as the time before:  and it always is...  SJP

Excellent Sushi and Sashimi very attentive but not pushy service and good cocktails. Also try the specials. Was here for the second time and amazed at the good quality food at reasonable prices. Only complaints are sometimes diners are sat very close to each other.

Jessica

The food wasn't great. The portions were too small and overpriced. We felt disappointed and ripped off.

I went to tsunami last night. My friends and I enjoyed a superb meal and excellent service. I could not fault it. I would highly recommend The beef bulgogi and the pork belly.

A gorgeous restaurant with incredible food, unsurpassed cocktails and wonderful service. We visited Tsunami on our anniversary and it was a very special evening. The staff automatically asked to put our bouquet in water and displayed them for us. They were extremely attentive, very polite and knowledgable about the food and the drinks. The food was delicious. Teriyaki salmon was to die for, along with tempura vegetables, a delicious side of noodles, battered squid with a wonderfully zesty japanese mayo with green chillies and a heavenly sticky toffee pudding. It was all exquisitely presented. The cocktails - a umami and a strawberry martini - smelled like perfume - beautifully fragrant. A dream of an evening for us and quite the find. It was also very easy to get to and to find.
