Breakfast on Pluto
Time Out says
Musical adaptation of Patrick McCabe’s acclaimed novel about a trans woman caught up in The Troubles
Irish novelist Patrick McCabe’s 1998 novel ‘Breakfast on Pluto’ – about a young trans woman who gets caught up in The Troubles and quits Ireland for London – has already famously been adapted into a film in 2005 (it gave Cillian Murphy one of his big early roles) and now it’s being turned into a musical. It would appear that Bob Kelly’s stage version – with songs by Duke Special – is likely to be closer in form to the novel, with the lead character back to her original name of Pussy (she was Kitty in the film). You can potentially see that Des Kennedy’s production might cause some controversy in not casting a trans actor in the lead: Pussy will be played by Fra Fee. Clearly there has been some consideration of the issue, however, with trans-led charity Gendered Intelligence on board in a ‘training and consultancy’ capacity, and an ‘actor showcase’ for trans performers running alongside during the Donmar run, which comes after dates in Galway, Dublin and Birmingham.
