Time Out says
Traditional ceremony at which coins are laid out on tombstones outside the west door of St Bartholomew's and hot cross buns are given to local children. The tradition stems from the generosity of antiquarian and law publisher Joshua Whitehead Butterworth, who at the end of the nineteenth century revived an old practice of distributing 6d to 21 poor widows of the parish, and handing out hot cross buns to the children who tagged along. The ceremony is recreated every year on Good Friday.
