The past year has been a momentous one for London: sit-ins, strikes, demonstrations, rioting and royalty. The year ahead promises much drama of its own with the mayoral elections in May and the Olympics in July. In the meantime here are some stand-out images from an unforgettable twelve months.

October 19. A campaigner brandishes a wooden cross as barricades burn during the eviction of 90 families from the Travellers' site at Dale Farm. The clearance marks the end of a ten-year battle between Basildon Council and the site's residents, who bought a former scrapyard on greet belt land in 2001 and established their caravans there.
