It’s summer, which means everything is best-enjoyed al fresco. From neatly-prepared picnics to snoozing on the grass, the great outdoors is calling. And we’ve got a suggestion for you: we think it could be time to pick out your floppiest sunhat and head east for the Stratford Summer Screen. This great-looking series is taking place at a new neighbourhood and business district called International Quarter London. It’s part of the development’s focus on serving local communities with events, entertainment and activities ranging from film and sport to music, dance and other cool cultural bits and bobs. It should be a good one. Interest been piqued? Well, here’s the lowdown on what’s happening at this totally free series. See you down the front!

Watch movies and more on the big screen

Want an excuse to up your screen time? Alright square-eyes, well how about an entire programme of blockbusters? We’re talking showings of ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’, ‘Isle of Dogs’, ‘Jurassic Park’, ‘Forrest Gump’ and more. Bring the popcorn, people. Plus, if you can’t get over tennis fever, catch the US Open between August 26 and September 8.

Enjoy some family fun

Did we mention there are a bunch of films suitable for the little ones too? Well, keep the kiddos in toe, because ‘Early Man’ will be showing on August 17 and ‘The Lego Movie 2’ on September 7. And there’s more – the screenings will be accompanied by themed activities, too, including clay modelling, Lego building workshops and face painting.

Fill your Friday with dance and music

Whether you’re done with the working week (or you’re only partway through), taking a break to kick back and relax is essential. Luckily, the Stratford Summer Screen is hosting some exciting events on Friday evenings, where you can enjoy a bucket-load of culture and entertainment without enduring the busy crowds of central London.

The bad news: you’ve already missed London-based ceilidh troupe, Cut a Shine. And the good news? You still have a chance to see swing dancing group Swing Patrol on August 23 and 10-piece brass band, Brasstermind, on August 9. But don’t start picturing some dreary, outdated sounds – this Brixton lot are bringing the party with a mix of Afrobeat, funk, soul and even grunge. Now that’s music to our ears.
