In a homage to Catalonia, find Modernist architecture, Dalí, beaches and a spectacular mountaintop monastery, just a short drive from the buzzing city

The dramatic ridge of Montserrat (‘jagged mountain’) and dizzyingly perched 11th-century Benedictine monastery offer beautiful views over all of Catalonia and as far as the island of Mallorca.

Drive through the 9,000 acre natural park, leave your car at the free, secure car park at Monistrol de Montserrat station and board a funicular up to the monastery. From there, funiculars take you near the summit, where there are several walking paths, and to the cove where the sacred statue of the Black Virgin, supposedly carved by St Luke, was found in 890. The monastery’s museum holds works by Dalí, El Greco, Caravaggio and Monet, along with religious and architectural exhibits.

Sitges’s sun worshippers can spend the day on the beach, then visit the Museu Cau Ferrat to see work by Picasso and other Catalan artists or the Museu Romántico, with a collection of over 400 beautiful dolls. And the food and nightlife at this friendly gay resort is none too shabby either.

Teatre-Museu Dalí, Figueres

Designed by the demon artist himself, Salvador Dalí’s egg sculpture-topped museum is Figueres’ most visited attraction. Full of wild installations, bizarre paintings, erotic sculptures and Dalí’s own crypt, it’s surreally eye-opening. Other Figueres attractions include the imposing 18th-century hilltop fortress Sant Ferran Castle.

Sabadell, alongside Terrassa, prospered as a textile town in the 19th century, when it was called the ‘Catalan Manchester’. This prosperity resulted in the 1872 City Hall and a grand array of modernista buildings commissioned in the early 20th century; highlights include the Hotel Suís, the Lluch office, by Gaudí’s assistant Juli Batllevell, and the Caixa de Sabadell building.

Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park

This 41,000 acre natural park of mountains, forests, waterfalls and lush valleys is crammed with wildlife including chamois, deer, wild pig and marmot. The Mirador del Orris – just 1.5km from the car park, on a wheelchair-accessible trail – gives an incredible panoramic view over the Pyrenees, and the best chance to spot the bearded vulture, a true mountain dweller that lives above 1,000m and has been seen at 7,500m on Mount Everest.
