Dubai loves its horses. It’s home to the world’s richest horse race – The £3m Dubai World Cup and increasingly home to one Frankie Dettori. Appointed retained jockey to HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in 1993, Dettori has gone on to 637 successes for Maktoum’s Godolphin stable.

You’ve been chosen as one of Time Out’s heroes. What do you think of that?

Come on! Let’s shake it! I’ve been racing there for [UAE Club] Godolphin for 14 years. The Dubai World Cup has now become a huge event – not just for Dubai but for the rest of the racing world. And it’s probably the best Dubai party of the year – World Cup night. I’m very proud to be considered someone who helped to build that.

    Who are your UAE heroes?

I think we should all take our hats off to what Sheikh Mohammed has done. I went to Dubai in the early ’90s and the biggest building was the World Trade, which looked like the Eiffel Tower. Now the city’s just gone beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. Everything is five star, minimum – hotels, buildings, restaurants, entertainment. We’re only half way as well – there’s more to come! He’s definitely my hero for Dubai.

What’s the biggest thing that’s happened here in racing, do you think?

The World Cup, without a doubt. And now the new racing venue, Meydan City is set to be completed in 2010 – which will be huge, huge. It’s just not coming quick enough! There are a lot of great places to race around the world, but Dubai World Cup night is probably one of the best nights on the racing calendar.

What’s your favourite thing about the UAE?

Obviously I love the weather. It’s a great place to spend the winter really – the kids and wife love it. It’s better than being stuck in England in the dark and cold. I love the golf. And every night is Saturday night. You can always go out and find a nice place to go – good clubs, good beaches, great weather and fantastic restaurants!

What is your favourite personal moment in the UAE?

Winning the World Cup in 2000, riding Dubai Millennium. The horse was a hot favourite so there were a lot of expectations. My parents were there. It was very nerve-racking, but it was a great moment for everyone. We smashed the track record. It was fabulous!

What does the future hold – for Dubai and for you?

The next three years are going to be very important – new airport, new roads, lots more to do. I can’t wait. I can’t wait!

What does Time Out mean to you?

I think it’s a great guide for everybody in Dubai. It gives you an outlook on the week ahead, places to go, new venues, concerts. Lots of entertainment. I have children and we always use it to find places to go with them. It’s a must-have thing in your house, every Thursday.
