‘Warm beer, lousy food, sad service,’ reads the sign in the dining area of this wonderful bar, which offers anything but.
For a start, it’s Red Stripe on draught, cold and irresistible; the food (grilled sardines on toast, wild-boar sausages and mash) is decent, although not cheap; and the staff are darlings. On a midweek night when a band is making a racket from the stage by the main door, you won’t be able to see your barman anyway; just shout, ‘Two Red Stripes!’ over the din.
Relative peace and quiet are provided in the dining room, where regularly changing exhibitions offer conversation material for couples who’ve just paired off from the bar.
