Bodies and Shadows: Caravaggio and His Legacy

Advertising

Time Out says

Captivating, remarkable and theatrical, Caravaggio's dramatic painting style made him an immediate success in his lifetime (1571 to 1610), but he was almost completely forgotten after his death, until the 20th century when art historians noted his influence on such other acclaimed artists as Rubens, Bernini and Rembrandt. Come to LACMA to see one of the world's most acclaimed artists in an exhibition devoted to the evolution of his style. The exhibit comprises 56 works, eight pieces from Caravaggio and the rest a sampling of work from 20 other artists from Italy, Spain, France and the Netherlands, all of whom were influenced and affected by the Italian painter. A master of dramatic light and noted for his exaggerated violence, Caravaggio created a style that has been studied and appreciated long after his death. The event is ticketed and has an optional audio guide, so plan ahead and carve out an afternoon to fully appreciate the experience.
