The Umbrellas of Cherbourg has been hailed as an enchanting, rhapsodic classic. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Nuart Theatres will host a weeklong screening of the film starting March 14. Jacque Demy’s timeless meditation on forbidden love begins like any other: boy meets girl, both fall madly in love, boy gets drafted into the army, heartache ensues. Gorgeous umbrella-store clerk Genevieve (Catherine Deneuve) and charismatic gas station mechanic Guy (Nino Castelnuovo) undergo a whirlwind romance of vibrant colors and stirring emotion, with every line sung to Michel Legrand’s beautifully evocative score. Couples looking for something beyond your typical rom-com, look no further. Tickets are going for $11 each, and remember to come armed with tissues: this one is might get a little teary.
