Artist Catherine Pilgrim's delicate drawings will be on display at Dudley House this November in her new exhibition Mrs Larritt in Upside Down Country. Pilgrim, who’s known for her meticulous drawings and lithographs, has been exhibiting since 1994 and has work in the National Gallery of Australia, Geelong Regional Gallery and Castlemaine Art Museum.
For some time Pilgrim has been researching the first occupants of Dudley House, the Larritt family. The impressive colonial brick house was originally constructed in 1858-59 for Richard Larritt, the first surveyor in Bendigo. When he moved into the house he also brought his young wife, Maggie Larritt, who was the first woman to live in the house and the namesake of Pilgrim’s exhibition.
In Mrs Larritt in Upside Down Country, Pilgrim explores how Richard's methodical, rigid maps contrast so starkly with the more human day-to-day life of his wife and their shared experience as migrants.
Mrs Larritt in Upside Down Country is open from November 15-24 2018. Entry is free.
