Not only is the route 96 one of our favourite tram routes, but it’s also one of Melbourne’s busiest lines. Many commuters along the line will have noticed a series of upgrades over the past year – and there’s a good reason for it. The route 96 tram will be Melbourne’s first fully accessible tram route.
The current end-to-end upgrade is turning all stops into easy access raised stops. It’s aimed at helping those who are vision impaired, passengers using wheelchairs, parents with prams and others with limited mobility to get on and off the tram easily.
Conversely, the upgrades will hopefully mean quicker tram travel times and improved priority of trams at traffic lights, plus improved safety, shelter, seating and info screens at all tram stops.
