In super-caffeinated Fitzroy, sometimes we give our coffee loyalty to whoever’s going to supply the most perk for our $3.80. At the moment that’s Doomsday – a simple two-metre-square espresso bar just off Brunswick Street attached to Blake Foster’s emporium of designer streetwear by the same name. It’s a basic offering of Coffee Supreme espresso, fancy teas and maybe a couple of pastries (from wherever they feel like getting them on Brunswick Street that day), but they’ve got a bench out front that catches all the morning rays and they’re throwing out as many high fives as drinks. Barista Mark Jacobson is a guy whose dial is always set to ‘Yeah!’ Two weeks in and he’s already got secret handshakes going with half the street – we even see one that evolves into a spontaneous arm wrestle. He pulls a good coffee too, as does co-barista Cam Green, having left his Camberwell café Collective Espresso to cheer up Fitzroy. If you’re after breakfast, about face and get yourself a breakfast board of boiled eggs and ham at Grub Food Van across the way, but if you just want a fly-by coffee shot and a fist bump, you’re set.
