A dark corner drinking den demanding investigation

A discreet laneway lurks in the heart of town, Von Haus is an intimate and homely little place where it's a pleasure to duck-in, hunker down and decompress. In fact, so low-fi is the vibe, dropping in for a drink and a bite is like popping by a pal's place for sips 'n' giggles. The rustic room of this cafe/bar orbits a communal high table festooned with dark-wood stools. The Euro-stylings don't end with the decor and the louche atmosphere either.
The menu's emphasis is on quality not quantity, with heart over art the order of the day. The Shepherds Pie and corned beef with mustard sauce are firm favourites and there's also preserved fish, ripe cheeses and pickles to please any ploughman. Von Haus specialises in wines (four whites and four reds underpin the drinks menu, all changing daily), and they all go swimmingly with the Tuesday fish pie. As good as the late-night haunt as this place is, the breakfast menu is of equal merit. Morning-after heartstarters include rustic egg and bacon sandwiches, toast with hummus and avocado and a gloriously gutsy muesli with poached fruit. Cosy, earthy and always welcoming, Von Haus may be hard to find but it's even harder to leave.
