In news that is sure to make every Melburnian swell with pride, it has just been revealed that none other than High Street in the city’s inner north has been crowned the coolest street in the world right now. Yes, you read that right: lil’ old High Street, which weaves through the suburbs of Northcote, Thornbury and Preston, has landed in the number one position, stealing the crown from Hollywood Road in Hong Kong, East Eleventh in Austin, Guatemala Street in Buenos Aires and Commercial Drive in Vancouver (which rounded out the top five, respectively). Excuse us while we go shout it from the rooftops. To determine the rankings, Time Out reached out to its global team of local expert editors and contributors, who each made a case for the coolest street in their city. The selection was then narrowed down to create a definitive list of the best avenues, thoroughfares, backstreets and boulevards on the planet. Every street to make the cut represents a destination with exciting new ventures in food, drink, nightlife and culture, aka the coolest spots you’ll want to hang out this year. So what makes High Street so damn cool? This is a strip that has cemented its gold medal status thanks to an abundance of offerings that appeal to both locals and visitors alike. Craving the best lasagne of your life? You need 1800 Lasagne on speed dial. Keen to take in sweeping views of suburbia at sunset with a Spritz in hand? While we're big lovers of seeing our city and its surrounds on foot, there's just something about whizzing around and experiencing the sights and sounds with a bike seat beneath your bum. You don’t need to be a lycra-loving, hardcore cyclist to appreciate the joys of riding around Victoria, as our state offers beautiful trails for both road racers and casual rider alike. So, grab your helmet and gear up, because the most popular scenic biking route in Australia has been named as a trail that's right here in our home state.  Crossing the finish line in first place is Warrnambool Foreshore Promenade, which can be found along the majestic Great Ocean Road. Keeping your eyes on the track can be a challenge amidst the myriad of scenic distractions, with the 5km trail extending from the Breakwater Rock Pier along the coastline to the famous whale nursery at Logans Beach.  Warrnambool Foreshore Promenade attained a scenic trail score of 77, which was calculated based on key factors, including trail ratings and reviews, total number of Instagram hashtags and amount of photos uploaded on Alltrails. This was the top score out of 200 biking trails across Australia that Evolve Skateboards analysed for the study, filtering out tracks that have a higher level of difficulty, are longer than 50km or unpaved. Coming in second-best was Mokare Heritage Trail in Western Australia, offering calming vistas of the Denmark River, ample shading under the paperbarks, and glimpses of Denmark's rail and

While we’re willing to argue that March is one of the best months of the year in Melbourne, unfortunately summer is officially over. And although the weather doesn’t seem to be changing much yet, the darker days are approaching – with Daylight Saving coming to an end next month for Victoria and other states of Australia. Here's a handy guide that answers all your Daylight Saving Victoria questions... When does Daylight Saving end in Victoria? In about a month's time, in the very early hours of Sunday, April 7, clocks will shift back an hour. The bad news: No more sunny times at the end of the day. The good news: You’ll get an extra-long sleep in that Sunday morning. Here’s hoping that the sunshine we've had in March so far will continue into April, and we can make the most of the lighter mornings. Do we lose an hour or gain an hour when Victoria Daylight Saving ends? If you also still can’t quite wrap your head around which direction time moves, then join the club. When Daylight Savings ends, our clocks will jump backwards, meaning we will gain an hour. However, what we gain in time we will pay for with shorter evenings – meaning the sun will set an hour earlier each evening.  Do I turn the clock back or forward when Victoria Daylight Saving ends? Look, as long as your smartphone and computer are connected to the internet, it will change automatically, so you can check it to figure out what time to change your analogue clocks and watches to. But, to help you get your head aro

It’s been an exciting year so far for Melbourne’s beer enthusiasts. Not only has the city’s first rooftop brewery bar just swung open its doors, we’ve also seen the Bodriggy crew transform an old Collingwood pub, development begin for Moondog's Wild West-themed drinking playground in Footscray, and now the launch of an energetic restaurant and beer hall from one of the nation’s most beloved craft beer brands, Pirate Life. Hurrah, mateys!  The award-winning Aussie brewery opened the doors to its new venue on March 14 – its fourth across Australia and its very first on Victorian soil – just a stone's throw away from the South Melbourne Market. Housed in a former mechanics’ garage, the space holds capacity for around 220 people and is designed to be a welcoming gathering spot where folks can enjoy the brand's beloved craft ales alongside equally crafty dishes. Highlights of the menu include pickled octopus carpaccio, raw bonito with burnt lemon, smoked goat spring rolls and low and slow-cooked asado ribs. It's the type of place you can drop in for a couple of light snacks or settle in for a heavier affair – with great beers to match, of course. Pirate Life hand-picked Maria Delengas and Nicolas Lopez as the head chefs, both of whom have leveraged their own South American and Greek heritage (as well as Melbourne's diverse cultural landscape) to craft a menu that's a bit more thrilling than your average brewpub fare.  “The menu reflects the food that we enjoy eating and we’re so

March 2024: The silly season is well and truly behind us, summer's gone and dipped back behind the clouds and most of us are back to our regular work (or study) and life routines. It's generally a time in the year where most of us try to get back on track with our budgets – but that doesn't mean you need to live on instant noodles. Melbourne's brimming with tasty cheap eats and we've rounded up the best of them. The late and great respected chef Anthony Bourdain once famously said: “I'd rather eat in Melbourne than Paris." It goes without saying that Melbourne has long been revered as one of Asia Pacific's most exciting food cities, but that status isn't just attributed to our fancy restaurants – special as many of those upper crust institutions may be. Our laneaways and hidden alcoves are brimming with cheap street eats, smashable pub deals and dinner options you can enjoy under $25, so you can stop counting your hard-earned pennies and start eating instead. Looking for a drink to wash it all down? These are the 50 best bars in Melbourne. Want to kick on? These are the best late-night bars across the town.
