Fed Square turns into a mini Malaysia this weekend
Warm up with a cup of teh tarik, eat all the delicious satay, and see some traditional dance and musical performances from Malaysia's diverse ethnic communities. The Fiesta Malaysia celebrates Malaysia's food, culture and more in an all-day event at Federation Square that will draw homesick Malaysian residents and Melburnians from all over.
Melbourne's Malaysian restaurants including Mamak, Nasi Lemak House, Killiney Kopitiam, Sambal Kampung and more will be setting up stalls at Federation Square, while retailers will selling traditional arts and crafts as well as clothing.
Among the highlights of events at the one-day fiesta are the sheer amount of eating competitions that will be held throughout the day. If you think you can handle the heat, you may opt to compete in the durian eating competition to see if you can stand mouthfuls of the fruit that people either love or hate. Later on, try your luck at the cup noodle eating competition or see if you're up to the fiddly task at hand for the ketupat making competition. If you're not clued in, ketupats are rice cakes cooked in intricately woven palm leaf pockets.
