Indefatigable writer-performer Daniel Beaty’s solo play imagines a slave ship that runs aground in front of the Statue of Liberty in modern times. Combining music, rhythm and vocal contortion, the actor embodies 20 men and women—from a police offer to a “slaveologist” to a “pissed-off negro”—in this satirical exploration of what it means to be free.
