In an age of keywords and tags, identifiers matter. A panel of artists and critics discuss the blending of, and distinctions between, categories of art-making, artistic identities, modes of production, taxonomies, and genre-bending, across and within artistic disciplines—if, that is, there still are disciplines.

About the panelists:

Pao Houa Her was born in Laos. Her and her family moved to Minnesota in 1986. Her studied photography at Minneapolis College of Art and Design where she received a BFA. In 2010, Her attended Yale University, School of Art where she received an MFA. Her currently lives and works in Minnesota.

John Fleischer studied art and educational psychology at the Ohio State University and the University of Minnesota. His multi-disciplinary investigations engage concurrent themes such as transition, contradiction, and conditioning through practice, play, culture, and ritual. John is a two-time recipient of the Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant and has exhibited locally, nationally, and internationally. Most recently, John has presented works at the Bielefelder Kunstverein in Bielefeld, Germany, and at the Soap Factory in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Dustin Yager’s installation and functional work deals with popular perceptions of pottery, taste, class, and all that goes along with it. His work has been exhibited in Minneapolis, Chicago, and nationally, and he has given presentations about his work and academic research at Pecha Kucha Chicago, the National Council for Education in the Ceramic Arts, The Soap Factory, and The American Craft Council. Yager earned a Master of Arts degree in Visual and Critical Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and holds a BA from Carleton College. He is originally from Wyoming.
