Releasing its first full-length, self-titled album, Matra has created an amalgamation of bold percussive works with palpable global roots. In works like Room 57 and Meterhey, Matra harnesses the ensemble's Hindustani music influence through slow, smoky melodic builds, powerful disjunct melodies, and sounds of imitated taxi horns from Mumbai. 10am is rooted in a bluegrass-style backbeat, Zousan layers complex, interlocking time over a simple Japanese children’s song, and D5 is a powerful composition eliciting a compelling marimba cadenza and dynamic tabla solo. The album finishes with Until We Get There, a piece that creates a unifying and dynamic closing track.

Matra is a percussion-based ensemble from the Twin Cities that finds influences in a wide variety of global genres and classical influences. Matra consists of Andres Crovetti on Vibraphone, Jenny Klukken on Marimba, Ryan Hays on bass, Mathew Solace on drum set, and Krissy Bergmark on tabla. Matra's notable performances include events for Minnesota Public Radio's Pop-up Classical, the Twin Cities Jazz Festival, MacPhail Center for Music events, touring Minnesota as MPR Class Notes Artists, a residency at Black Dog Coffee and Wine Bar in Lowertown St. Paul, and last year’s preview of original works at the Southern Theater, entitled Matra: Eastern and Western at the Southern. Matra will be touring this Spring across the midwest for the release of its self-titled album of original works.
