Migration, Blackness And Muslim Identity Artists Workshop says
This Saturday May 13th, join the East African Diaspora Artists Initiative in collaboration with Minneapolis Institute for Art for a workshop centering East African artist narratives.

There will be story-sharing, performances, and dialogue with East African artists Lula Saleh, Nimo Farah, and Abdirahman Ali.

The East African diaspora is unique in its experiences with migration, racial, and cultural identity. Navigating between experiences of Black Muslim identities and as African migrants/refugees, how are millennial East African artists maintaining connections to their homelands? And how are we creating new, multi-diasporic homes in the U.S.?

Come ready to participate in writing and movement as we explore our stories together. Free to the public and open to all.

This event is part of a larger Mia series on Global Movements, A Series of Programs about (Im)migration.

Culture and creativity know no geographic boundaries. They have been shaped by people everywhere—in their home countries, on new lands, and in between. In May, we’re hosting a series exploring the topic of immigration, migration, and the arts. This series of talks, film screenings, and discussions brings together artists, authors, and community leaders to explore the topic of (im)migration. Drawing on artwork from the museum’s collection as inspiration, programs will explore the hopes, challenges, and determination of the successive waves of migrants who contribute to our vibrant cultural landscape. Through an examination of this topic from multiple perspectives, participants will have an opportunity to build increased understanding of one another and strengthen connections across cultures. Presented in partnership with UNICEF and the Advocates for Human Rights.
