William S Burroughs: A Man Within

Stumbling back and forth across the wonky line that separates the agreeably ramshackle from the outright slipshod, if this documentary about the beat writer William Burroughs succeeds at all then it’s on the calibre of the interviews with friends, acolytes and lovers. It settles down after an especially shaky start and splits itself into sections exploring various aspects of Burroughs’s life – homosexuality, drug addiction, firearms. But even though the title suggests the film is a character study and not a literary exploration, there isn’t enough time spent on the man’s writing to make for a complete portrait. Those unfamiliar with his work may come away with the feeling that Burroughs was only famous for blowing his wife's brains out and ‘inventing’ punk rock.
