Nashville Jazz Workshop says
The Nashville Jazz Workshop, in collaboration with Van Heusen Music Corporation, will present the next "Jazz by the Book" at Parnassus Books on Saturday, September 12, 2015. The program will begin at 3pm with a meet-and-greet with Christopher A. Coppula, author of the new biography of composer Jimmy Van Heusen, Swinging on a Star, to be followed at 4pm by a live presentation of "Jazz by the Book: The Music of Jimmy Van Heusen,"

The musical presentation will include vocalists Robert Whorton, Jennifer Bruce, Sharron Ferrara, Nancy Mechem and Catherine Holder, accompanied by a trio consisting of Lori Mechem (piano), Roger Spencer (bass), and Ralph Henley (drums). The show will also feature narration with an original script about the composer's life written and presented by actor and author Don O. Henry.

Jimmy Van Heusen was arguably one of the most accomplished songwriters in history. Claiming four “Oscars” and one Emmy award among his credits he also wrote more songs (85) recorded by Frank Sinatra, his long time friend, than any other composer. He also composed the songs for another good friend, Bing Crosby for six of the seven Crosby/Hope Road pictures. His catalog includes such classic tunes as "But Beautiful," "Come Fly with Me," and "It Could Happen to You." Van Heusen is considered to be one of the most prolific contributors to that collection of popular standards known as the Great American Songbook, having written over 1000 songs, most of them standards.
