Few bands can match the diverse sound of Sweden’s Opeth. Since forming in the Stockholm suburb of Bandhagen in 1990, the Swedes have eclipsed convention, defied the odds and crafted 12 stunningly beautiful, intrinsically intense albums. Opeth’s new album, “Sorceress,” is proof that chief architect Mikael Åkerfeldt has a near-endless well of greatness inside. From the album’s opener “Persephone” to “The Wilde Flowers” and “Strange Brew” and the album’s counterpart title tracks “Sorceress” and “Sorceress II,” the twelfth full-length album is an unparalleled adventure where visions cleverly and secretly change, colors mute as if weathered by time, and sounds profoundly challenge the listener. Gojira is one of France’s most extreme bands. Since forming in 1996, the band has been an ever-evolving experiment in extreme metal built on a world-conscious outlook with roots firmly planted both in the hippie movement and in an environmentally-conscious, new age mentality. Gojira’s sixth full-length album, “Magma,” is fueled by unbridled emotion with 10 tracks confronting the fragility of life, the aftershocks of loss and what lies beyond this realm. From top to bottom, the album represents Gojira at their most passionate, powerful and pure, uninhibited by outside influences and within its own sphere. This week, Gojira was nominated for two 2017 Grammy Awards, including for Best Rock Album (“Magma”) and Best Metal Performance (“Silvera”). For more information, visit Gojira-Music.com.
