Rev. Alvin Herring and Jerry Tello, two revered experts in the areas of compassion. diversity, peace and healing, speak at this annual luncheon where we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and César Chávez for their hard-fought battles for civil rights.


Ashé Cultural Arts Center proudly announces the Martin Luther King, Jr.- César Chávez Luncheon, named for two giants who led non-violent peace movements for civil rights for African Americans and Mexican farm workers, respectively.

The guest speakers for this occasion are experts who are interwoven in cultural affairs.

Rev. Alvin Herring is the deputy director of faith and formation for the PICO National Network, one of the nation's largest networks of locally-based community organizing agencies. He is also the CEO and lead facilitator of Side By Side, a cutting edge diversity and community building company that specializes in working with young people on college, university and high school campuses across the country. Herring brings over 20 years of experience as a trainer and consultant in the areas of leadership development, community building/organizing, diversity, executive coaching and strategic planning. He marries that with many years of successful leadership, teaching and mentoring in higher and secondary education.

Herring is guided by the principals of community activism, leads with a real belief in change and inspires hope in the possibility of people organized for the good of the planet and the good of humanity.

Jerry Tello is an internationally recognized authority in family strengthening, therapeutic healing, cross cultural issues and motivational speaking.

As a noted therapist, author, performer and program developer, over the last 30 years Tello has incorporated his real life experience, together with research-based knowledge and indigenous cultural-based teachings to engage all in a reality-based healing and growth-inspiring experience. He is the author of children's books, professional publications, culturally-based curriculums and inspirational CDs and DVDs. Tello has received numerous awards, including the Ambassador of Peace award and Presidential Crime Victims Service award.
