Instant Opus Improvised Series says
One of the greatest historical figures of the 20th century is John Sinclair. In the late 1960's his political activism and formation of the White Panther Party led a revolution that amost overthrough the government. In return the CIA planted 2 joints on him to try and shut him up. He was given 10 years to life for this small offence. Altough he was locked away, his supporters would not be silenced. John Lennon, Stevie Wonder, Allen Ginsberg and many other notable figures of the time held rallies to try and get him out of jail. John and Yoko even wrote a song about him that made the charts. After 2 1/2 years they were successful and got him out. He left the US and took up residency in Amsterdam where he began to hone his craft as a writer, poet, and spoken word artist, all while becomeing a founding member of the Canibus Cup. On his return to the US, became the manager for such groups as The Sun Ra Arkestra and MC5 and was one of the founding members of New Orleans own WWOZ. Believe me, this man has some stories to tell. I'm breaking away from the format of Instant Opus slightly, because John Sinclair is not able to improvise poetry, but he is writing some special pieces just for this night. However, I has assembled a trio of young politically minded musicians with monster chops to improvise with his spoken words. Stephine Nillis, Nathan Lambertson, and Joey Van Leeuwen would be an outstanding show in it's own write, even if this legand were not joining them. This is also a special night for me, because it's the one year anniversary of Instant Opus. Thank you for all your support.
