Save Our Cemeteries says
Remembered most famously as the birthplace of jazz, between 1898 and 1917 the cribs and cabarets of Storyville also played host to countless customers who wandered into its confines with more than music on their mind. These citizens of New Orleans and elsewhere rubbed shoulders with musicians, pimps, prostitutes and often the police in their pursuit of the ‘sporting’ activities offered within the red-light district. Despite the importance of Storyville to the development of New Orleans culture, the fate of most of those who gave the area its life – the madams and working girls themselves – have been lost to history in death. In this lecture Gordon Bond will discuss the relationship between these women and the city’s historic cemeteries, and reveal the ultimate results of his attempt to determine the final resting places of the ladies of Storyville.
