ABOUT THE JOURNEY:

In 2014, Paulette had a double mastectomy and no reconstruction. She is 49, a mother of 8 children, living in New Orleans. After a year of chemo, she came out of the woods and found herself alienated by the 'culture' around breast cancer. In an effort to augment the popular pink imagery, she began to walk around topless, casually displaying her mastectomy scars. The effect was powerful. She's developed a significant Facebook following and has decided to take the message on the road.

This Spring Paulette will embark on a 1,000 mile topless journey from Biloxi MS to Washington DC. Her message is simple - we need to work on a cure, we need to work on prevention, breast cancer is more than a pink bow - it's a devastation. She's walking to be confrontational with her survival, to commemorate loved ones lost, and to de-stigmatize the shame that many women feel about their 'disfigured' bodies - bodies deemed unacceptable either from the battle scars related to cancer, or for the more common reason that most women's bodies fall outside the conventional realm of 'acceptable.' Paulette is bold and brave and feels like the best way she can change the discourse around breast cancer is by doing this walk, and we're following behind her to document it.
