Self Absorbed is a peek inside fifteen artists and how they view themselves. This exhibition aims to highlight the importance of portraiture, but more specifically self-portraits. Why do artists create self-portraits? Perhaps we like knowing we’re rendering ourselves immortal, or to gain a better understanding of the figure as we happen to be the most available subject. Whatever the case, intense introspecting occurs as the canvas literally absorbs the paint. Each piece is indicative of how the artists view themselves creating a true exploration of identity. With a large selection of works in various mediums Self-Absorbed allows us to observe, as the creator becomes the subject.
Through the rise of the “selfie”, self-portraiture has arguably become one of the most popular visual genres and this exhibition aims to enhance our understanding of portraiture through artists:
