Join us for the American Italian Cultural Center's first joint film and lecture series! On Thursday July 28, Dr. Michael Syrimis, Associate Professor of Italian at Tulane University, will connect Maciste in Hell to other comical portrayals of masculinity in different forms of Italian films produced much earlier, during the First World War. He will demonstrate that through the use of slapstick, cinema comments upon such diverse masculine traits as belligerence, supernatural strength, and ineptness. At the same time, slapstick portrays the body as mechanical, as a reflection of the war’s values of order, discipline, and uniformity.
