Take a look at the shocking and impactful winners of the 2022 World Press Photo awards

The contest recognises the best documentary photography of 2021

As unrelenting wildfires destroyed villages on the Greek island of Evia last summer, photographer Konstantinos Tsakalidis took this photograph of local resident Panayiota Kritsiopi. Fortunately, both managed to escape, with the latter saying later that ‘at that moment I was shouting not only for myself – but for the whole village’.

The haunting image was among the winners of this year’s World Press Photo awards. The competition recognises the best photojournalism and documentary photography of the past year, with more than 64,000 photographs submitted from 130 countries in 2021. You can see all the winners on the official website, but in the meantime, here are some more of our favourites:
