During the 1980s, no one captured the mean neon nights of pre-Disney Times Square better than Dickson, whose paintings were populated by the nocturnal denizens of The Deuce, as 42nd Street was known back then. Picked out against a backdrop of garish fluorescent colors, they are pictured at a voyeuristic remove, as if seen through a telephoto lens. This survey of Dickson’s work re-opens the window on a world that is no more.
