Nalini Malani, In Search of Vanished Blood

Born in 1946, Malani was among the first Indian artists to use video, though her work also comprises drawing, painting and film. Malani's background (her family members were refugees of the subcontinent's violent 1947 partitioning into India and Pakistan) figures prominently into her ongoing theme: the individual marginalized by history. This project—an ambitious installation that involves spinning, reverse-painted glass cylinders,throwing multilayered shadow-play imagery across the walls—debuted in 2012 at dOCUMENTA 13 in Kassel, Germany.
