An exemplar of Northern California funk, Robert Arneson (1930–1992) was a major figure of Left Coast art. Like Ken Price, Arneson was a key innovator in the medium of clay, pushing the boundaries of what ceramics could mean. He was known particularly for cartoonish, oversize portrait busts, which were often of himself. But in this show of the artist's early works, the focus is on bringing a perverse animating spirit to inanimate objects, like his outlandish—even sexist—take on a urinal.
