Even if you know your state-of-the-art jazz piano trios—the Bad Plus, the Bandwagon, Vijay Iyer's band—there's still a good chance Dawn of Midi will surprise you. The band's handsomely controlled interplay suggests an unplugged translation of contemporary electronica, or an introspective sonic cousin to avant-rock futurists like Battles.
