How can an upstart watering hole lure ever-fickle customers? By having celebrity DJs? Exotic cocktails? Audacious art? David Sliskin, manager of the Alligator Lounge, pulled an even hotter idea out of the oven: From 6pm to 2am, free pizza is served with every drink. Word spread quickly, and now penny-pinchers from all over the borough make the pilgrimage for $10 pitchers of Rheingold and fine thin-crust pies, baked over a wood-stoked fire. At a time when little seems to rouse tousle-haired Brooklynites from their ennui, enthusiastic patrons fill the bar every night. And the DJs? Free pizza, Sliskin says, is the best DJ in town.

I always have the best time at this dive—especially on Saturday nights, when folks from Kings of Karaoke take over the back room. But the free karaoke and $6 beers are not even the tip of the iceberg—for every drink you buy, you get a ticket for a free pizza. And it's not just a slice—it's a whole small pie! If you throw the pizza men a buck or two, you can add toppings like onions, mushrooms and sausage. But when you're drunk and in need of food, the plain pie really gets the job done.
I think pretty much every New Yorker has been broke at one time or another, and this is a great place to go when you're down on your luck, but still want to drink some beer. With every beer purchase, you get a free cheese pizza, with all toppings costing an extra buck. This isn't the best pizza in the world, but it's damn near perfect when paired with a $6 beer. Dinner and a drink for $6! Can't beat it. Plus you keep getting free pizzas with every drink, so you can fill up two meals' worth if you're up to it, or sneak one out the door in napkins in your pockets if you're truly hard up. Plus, there's arcade games and pool in the back room.
The pizza is no longer free. It's a dollar now, which isn't much, but the difference in mood setting between paying nothing and paying anything is huge. Now it's just another average bar filled with TVs and some cheap pizza. Is the pizza worth more than a buck? Probably $2, although it's pretty skimpy on the cheese, but is it worth coming back when there are some many other great bars around? No. One redeeming quality is the sweet back room with no TVs and with skee-ball (a shorter ramp that makes you feel good about yourself).
