The beloved Brazilian-tinged bash ALMA NYC returns to Sullivan Room for a reunion affair.

By Bruce Tantum

It was a full decade ago that DJ True and spinner-percussionist Miller Cruz joined up with party producer Joann Jimenez to kick off the ALMA affair, a night devoted to Brazilian rhythms and various dance-music offshoots thereof; host Manchildblack joined up soon after, and the fiesta soon became one of Gotham’s most beloved. The affair attracted such notable guest spinners as Joe Claussell, Osunlade, the Martinez Brothers and King Britt—not to mention a crowd of amazing dancers—but after about five years the gang decided to quit while they were ahead, and the carnivalesque affair ended its run. Still, you can’t keep a good party down, and the gang is returning to the fray for one night only at Sullivan Room this Thursday. (Working on Friday is for losers anyway, right?) To when your appetite, here’ a hot ALMA mix from days of yore, specifically 2006.

The ALMA NYC Reunion is at Sullivan Room Thursday, Feb 7.
