DJ mix: Jenifa Mayanja
The Bumako label's Jenifa Mayanja lays down a set of deep vibes.

First a disclaimer: We used to spin with Jenifa Mayanja at Avenue A Sushi back in the ’90s and early ’00s, and bought records from her when she worked the counter at the much-missed Dance Tracks record shop. We loved her house-music selecting and graceful mixing then—and we still love it now. But the Ugandan-born, Bridgeport, Connecticut, artist has been doing more than just playing records since then—she’s developed into a top artist, with beautifully deep releases on her own Bumako label, as well as on EDJ (the imprint she runs with husband and partner-in-clubland-crime Jus-Ed), Ed’s Underground Quality and, more recently, Big Bait Records and Sound Warrior. (It was for that last label, a “forum for developing and promoting women electronic music producers,” that she recorded the subtle, wondrous “Heading Into Tomorrow,” a track well worth tracking down. On Friday, October 25th, she plays the main room of Output with Nina Kraviz and Stacey Pullen, and to mark the occasion, Mayanja has blessed us with this beautiful and blissful exclusive mix.
