OTHER NOMINEES Dos Toros, Fonda, Mesa Coyoacan

It was a good year for Mexican food in NYC, with authentic eats gently nudging nacho cheese from its ill-begotten throne. But it seems you prefer a bit of Cal with your Mex, naming Calexico Carne Asada—the brick-and-mortar offshoot of Soho's glorified taco truck—the best South of the Border newcomer. Calexico's griddled quesadillas, chubby burritos, and tacos stuffed with fillings like rich skirt steak and juicy pulled pork might not make a Mexican homesick, but they sure are tasty. Calexico Carne Asada 122 Union St at Columbia St, Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn (718-488-8226)
