New this week: The Sixth Ward
Thu Oct 25 2007
The Sixth Ward This Lower East Side bar from the folks behind 200 Orchard is picking up the beer-garden slack while Williamsburg’s hotly anticipated Radegast Hall waits for its final permits. Unlike its Czech brethren, the Sixth Ward (named for the downtown neighborhood once densely populated with Irish immigrants) has a distinctly Gaelic vibe. Co-owner Ray Burns flew in a beer specialist from the Emerald Isle to ensure that the nitrogen and CO2 levels in each pint of Guinness are identical to those found in the typical pub in Ireland. If snagging a seat on the 1,500-square-foot all-season patio proves tricky, grab a spot inside at the 33-foot solid-oak bar, where Anglocentric snacks like shepherd’s pie and fish-and-chips are on offer.
