Armagnac is the oldest brandy distilled in France. And it's about time that we here in the US know it better. Wine Lovers of NYC is helping that along by having a fantastic(and low-cost - only $35) tasting guided by May Matta-Aliah, an official Armagnac Ambassador. She will present 6 wonderful Armagnacs, ending with a couple of single vintages, in addition to a welcome Armagnac Punch. This promises to be a fun and educational adventure into one of the greatest brandies of France that still remains a well-kept secret to most...but not for long.

When: Sunday November 132-4 PM
Where: Pierre Loti Union Square 53 Irving Place at 17th Street between Park Avenue South & 3rd Avenue, New York, NY 10003
Ticket Price: $35

Sing up at http://www.wineny.com/intro-to-armagnac.html

How can I list an event of an organization inviting the public to an open meeting about historical fiction?

MEETING NOVEMBER 29 AT 5:45 at JEFFERSON MARKET LIBRARY

SIXTH AVENUE AT WEST 10 STREET

The Historical Novel Society--New York Chapter will host a special, open meeting, featuring editor, writer, and teacher  Beena Kamlani, sharing her insights on enriching writing and novels. She contends that the best kind of historical fiction is contemporary, daringly modern, and convincing at the same time. She will show how a writer’s imagination, powers of invention, and the facts of her subject’s life play together, enticing readers who are increasingly interested in knowing more about royals, artists, political figures, and ordinary people of other times and places. Her talk will deal with the skills the writer needs to create characters, set firmly within their own times but made real—authentic, flawed, fallible, and above all, deeply human. We should show our characters through their foibles, disappointments, hopes, and accomplishments. The writer of fictional biography must take care that relatively well-known characters are authentic and their actions and choices plausible, while reaching far corners that biography cannot.

Beena Kamlani has held editorial positions at Oxford University Press, Harper & Row, Random House and both the Viking and Penguin imprints of the Penguin Group at Penguin Random House, where she has edited and developed a wide range of books, working with writers inluding Saul Bellow, Terry McMillan, Frederick Barthelme, Kim Edwards, Garrison Keillor, s, William T. Vollmann, Paul Beatty, David Leavitt,  and Blanche Wiesen Cook and the translator Robert Fagles. She was an associate professor of publishing at New York University, where, she taught the craft of editing and received NYU’s award for teaching excellence. She now teaches at Hunter College. She is also an award-winning writer of fiction and an essayist.

What about an actual calendar?  You know, where things are listed by date?

There are some good options here but I wish they had listed the Valentine's Dome Double Feature event happening at MoMA PS1 Friday night. A friend just told me about it and it seems like a lot of fun to see two awesome movies(Some Like it Hot and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) with friends or a date for only $10. It is definitely another great option for anyone without Valentine's day plans.
