Henri-Georges Clouzot's Inferno

Movies, Documentary
4 out of 5 stars
In 1964, as the New Wave threatened to edge out the old guard, French filmmaking legend Clouzot decided to play the upstarts at their own game by unveiling a long-treasured personal project. ‘Inferno’ was inspired by Clouzot’s own battles with depression and insomnia and would employ all the latest psychedelic in-camera visual effects to portray its jealous hero’s inner torment. Utilising Clouzot’s striking unfinished footage and new interviews with cast and crew, Bromberg and Medrea’s documentary explores the reasons behind the film’s ignominious collapse, a haunting story of self-indulgence and experimentation gone astray and a fascinating cautionary tale for budding filmmakers.
