Time Out says

It’s the languid pacing that smothers The Other Side of Paradise, a memory-lane road trip that’s suffocated by awkward silences. Rose (Martin) travels through the South with her estranged brother and would-be boyfriend, a journey that’s chronicled through long takes and static angles; director Justin D. Hilliard has cited Kubrick as an influence. But the latter was always dissecting his characters, while the former wants us to love them. He’s waxing nostalgic about the healing powers of family and new love. The lukewarm result isn’t offbeat; it’s just off.—S. James Snyder
