It may have taken a little fudging—for example, adding a sixth slot to the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series field, which helped Mad Men’s Jon Hamm squeak in—but for a change, the nominations for the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards actually serve as a pretty solid index to television’s best series and performances. Still, this doesn’t change the underlying problem—there’s just too much good TV out there for the Emmys to recognize more than a tiny fraction of the terrific work that’s being done in the medium today.

Enter TONY’s Shadow Emmys, which give you the chance to vote in the major acting and series categories from a field of nominees made up entirely of those left out in the cold by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. As with the real Emmys, all nominated series and performances aired between June 1, 2007, and May 31, 2008. You can cast a ballot online until 11:59pm on September 20. Following the ceremony (airing September 21 at 8pm on ABC, cohosted by Tom Bergeron, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel, Jeff Probst and Ryan Seacrest, the nominees in the new Outstanding Reality/Competition Host category), the results will appear online and in TONY 679.
