Nachos NY kicks off Cinco de Mayo festivities with its double-feature fifth annual guacamole showdown. The afternoon round will feature 20 guac amateurs smashing their best avocado creation for the judges' and people's awards—the panel includes Dan Pashman (The Sporkful podcast) and author Gaby Dalkin (Absolutely Avocados). That night, the pro circuit highlights local chefs and restos such as Choncho's Tacos, Food Republic and Mexicue, vying for the popular vote. Grab tortilla chips from Food Should Taste Good to scoop up samples of offbeat spreads—past winners have included a Thai-inflected mash with coconut, curry powder, raisins and cilantro, and an “av-iche” with whitefish, corn and mango. Along with the dips, Coolhaus and Mexicue trucks will be parked outside offering up even more South of the Border bites, like smoked short-rib tacos with Memphis mole and pickled onions. The bar will have discounted Brooklyn Lager ($5) on tap, and DJ SeekTen will hype up the crowd with funky Latin grooves.
