Narcissa cracks Time Out New York’s "100 Best Restaurants" list

In the wake of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants announcement, we’re adding John Fraser’s gleaming vegetable temple to our own best-restaurants roundup

This year's announcement of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants was earlier this week, and all of the yawnworthy usual suspects were accounted for: Copenhagen’s Noma took the top spot (again); Spain dominated the top ten (with El Celler de Can Roca, Mugaritz and Arzak); and New York’s fine-dining bastions Eleven Madison Park, Le Bernardin, Per Se and Daniel all made the cut. It’s a winning crew, sure, albeit a seriously predictable one.

To rectify this, we’re adding some fresh life our own roundup of best restaurants: Narcissa, the three-month-old Standard dining room from Michelin-starred chef John Fraser (Dovetail). The talented toque’s veg-heavy menu—including lush rotisserie beets with creamy horseradish and inventive carrots Wellington with silky sunchoke puree—has garnered rave reviews across the board, from us included—former Time Out restaurant critic Daniel Meyer awarded the restaurant four stars. Meyer said Narcissa sends up a “sublime hymn” to the “vegetable high altar”; whereas most chefs “let the vegetables speak for themselves…Fraser smartly whispers through them instead, and it’s worth hanging onto everything he has to say.”
