Seagull Hair Salon

When I was a kid, my dad called me “Gumby head,” thanks to the unfortunate way my cowlicks and superdense locks conspired to make my head appear slanted like the little clay guy. I was reminded of that nickname when Luke Kalat—one of four hair geniuses on staff at the adorably retro Seagull—took one look at a particularly troublesome cowlick on the back of my dome and said, “Huh. You must have a hard time with this.” Yes! Yes, I do. And he’s the first barber I’ve ever had who felt my pain right away. After I told him about the old sobriquet, he soothingly said, “Well, let’s see what we can do about that.” And there was plenty he could do about it. Thirty minutes later I had the best haircut I’ve ever had—and something that’s been lacking since my Gumby days: a hairdresser I’m happy to go back to. 240 W 10th St between Bleecker and Hudson Sts (212-989-1807, seagullhair.com).
